Quit Smoking With E-cigarettes

Too little research, too ambiguous results – supporters of the e-cigarette and their opponents can accuse each other of this. E-cigarettes are not a healthy alternative to tobacco cigarettes. However, the fact that it is far less harmful than a conventional cigarette is often left out as information. The 7th Alternative Drugs and Addiction Report clearly states that harm reduction should be a priority. And yet education about the use of e-cigarettes falls by the wayside. This article can find more information about the report and quitting smoking with e-cigarettes!

More education about e-cigarettes

Even if previous research already shows that switching to e-cigarettes as an intermediate step to stopping smoking is quite successful, vaping is still condemned by the WHO and politicians as an alternative to smoking. In the current alternative drug and addiction report, the topic of harm reduction, reducing the damage caused by the consumption of addictive substances, has been discussed in more detail. It should primarily offer smokers an alternative for their addiction that does them less harm. That is what e-cigarettes offer.

The WHO and other health organizations believe that using electronic cigarettes or promoting them would only lead to non-smokers, including many young people, using them as a gateway to smoking. Which is why there are TPD vape regulation in the EU. The colorful, fruity flavors made vaping attractive to youngsters, which would later entice them to smoke. However, this gateway theory is not confirmed. On the contrary, studies show that the number of young people smoking has declined in recent years. Most people who use e-cigarettes have tried traditional cigarettes before.

Politicians must close the knowledge gap about smoking alternatives. There needs to be more education about e-cigarettes in society. Most people still believe e-cigarettes are just as harmful as tobacco smokers. But what do previous research results show? And what about smoking cessation and reduction?

E-cigarette: what helps with smoking cessation?

At the last specialist conference on e-cigarettes and vaping products, renowned addiction researchers and physicians drew up a position paper in which they commented on “New ways to curb smoking.” They support the use of e-cigarettes as a means of quitting smoking and recommend them to politicians and doctors. Physicians, in particular, should actively recommend less harmful alternatives to smoking to their patients rather than just admonishing them to quit entirely or offering nicotine replacement products.

The updated Cochrane Collaboration review shows that e-cigarettes are better for quitting than substitutes. E-cigarettes have doubled the success rate of quitting smoking. Of course, vaping is not without health risks. At least there are no meaningful long-term studies. However, it has long been known that tobacco smoke releases more pollutants through combustion than vapor. Toxins such as tar, arsenic, lead, nickel, and many more that settle in the lungs when smoking, cause enormous damage to health and, in the worst case, lead to death. As an addictive substance, nicotine is the least of the evils.

The priority is to minimize the intake of these pollutants, to reduce the consumption of tobacco cigarettes. Research has shown that switching to vaping is much less likely to relapse to cigarettes than nicotine replacement products such as gum, mouth sprays, or patches. So why is the e-cigarette still the subject of so much criticism?

E-cigarettes As A Replacement – Medical Parties

One of the biggest criticisms of the e-tipper is its meager research. It is still largely unclear what damage vaping can cause. Another point is that the addictive behavior of smokers is further encouraged with the e-cigarette and thus does not lead to quitting. The risk of relapse is too high. The parallel vaping and smoking is also a negative factor.

On the other hand, proponents maintain that cold turkey rarely leads to successful smoking cessation. Vaping, on the other hand, whether with or without nicotine, would initially maintain the necessary and accustomed behaviors of many smokers but would slowly reduce them over time. The nicotine supply can also be throttled with the liquid. Additional behavioral therapy aids are also essential supports in order not to suffer a relapse.

Further research on e-cigarettes is essential

The findings of the Cochrane Review speak for themselves. However, significantly more research needs to be carried out to be able to present solid facts and to be able to convince even the last critics of the e-cigarette as an alternative to smoking. Due to the increased interest in medicine and the demand for alternatives to smoking, there is a good chance that more studies will be carried out on vaping and, consequently, more education about e-cigarettes. On one point, however, there is a scientific consensus: e-cigarettes are not risk-free, but they are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes.
