E-cigarettes do not produce smoke, but vapor, which does not necessarily have to taste like tobacco – there is a wide range of flavors with or without nicotine. In addition, there is no ash and less waste when vaping an electronic cigarette. But how exactly does vaping work and how are the components of the electronic cigarette structured? For the function of an e-cigarette, three essential components are usually required:
Tasks & structures of the individual components
the evaporator – fulfills the function of generating steam by liquid hitting the heating coil.
A suitable battery – energy source & responsible for power supply. This energy heats the heating coil.
A liquid in the corresponding tank – the tank is a container for liquids and is usually connected to the mouthpiece.
Then there is the mouthpiece and the microprocessor, without which vaping would not work.
In principle, these three most important components work like a hot pan into which you pour cold water, in this case liquid: it steams!
Function of the individual components
When you pull on the mouthpiece, you activate the battery, which supplies the atomizer with a certain voltage, depending on the electrical resistance (ohm) of the atomizer head. This automatic activation takes place with the help of sensors that register the resulting negative pressure. With most e-cigarettes, a power button is pressed manually at the same time as you draw to allow electricity to flow. In the evaporator there are so-called heating coils/heating spirals, which are heated by the current. The liquid evaporates at temperatures of up to 315 degrees Celsius.
Composition of the vapor
However, in the atomizer head of an e-cigarette, which is also referred to as an evaporator, it is not water vapor that is produced, but a mixture of propylene glycol and glycerin vapours. These substances in turn act as carriers of the aromas and possibly also of the nicotine, which is why the vapor as a flavor carrier not only plays an optical role, but also plays a major role in the function of every electronic cigarette. While tobacco is burned with conventional cigarettes and smoke is produced which the smoker inhales – including all harmful ingredients – vapor is produced with an e-cigarette.

The evaporator contains the evaporator head, in which one or more heating coils (e.g. dual or triple coil winding) are housed. The number of heating coils also influences the amount of vapor generated by e-cigarettes. In this context, “coil” stands for the winding, while “dual” or “triple” describe the number of coils, i.e. whether one, two or three heating coils are included. And the more of them are installed in the evaporator head, the more vapor is generated.
The atomizer base connects the battery and the atomizer head, which in turn is connected to the liquid tank. A mouthpiece is attached to this, next to the evaporator heads one of the components of an e-cigarette, which you can and should change regularly for hygienic reasons. A heating coil, like a light bulb, can burn out. With normal use, an evaporator head lasts about a month.
Depending on the model, the entire function in the vaporizer is triggered either by pulling on the mouthpiece, whereby the vacuum activates the battery, or by manually pressing the on/off switch. The liquid from the liquid tank comes into contact with the heating coils, either through manual dripping or with the help of a wick, which usually consists of cotton wool.
The heating coils placed in the evaporator head are supplied with energy and heated by the battery, usually with a lithium-ion cell. Depending on whether you use two or three heating coils, a corresponding amount of steam is produced. The number of so-called heating coils has a significant influence on the density and quantity of the vapor, and therefore also on the taste. After the e-cigarette is switched on, the liquid in the liquid in the liquid tank is fed into this area of the vaporizer and vaporized or nebulized when it hits the heated heating coils. This happens at temperatures of up to 315 degrees Celsius, while tobacco cigarettes require 600 to 800 degrees. If the user now draws on the mouthpiece of the e-cigarette, this vapor is transported via an air flow channel and can be inhaled or vaped.
Thanks to the wide range of liquid flavors, everyone can get their personal preferred amount of nicotine. Or do without it altogether, as liquids are also available without nicotine. However, the well-known effect of smoking cigarettes when vaping is a little longer in coming. Because an important component of the smoke of a cigarette, which is also responsible for the development of addiction, is missing in the e-cigarette vapour.
With normal cigarettes, you can feel the effects of the nicotine after 3 to 5 seconds because they contain ingredients that accelerate the transmission of nicotine to the brain. For e-cigarettes it can take up to 30 seconds.
